SEU Georgia MBBS Internship: Duration, Clinical Training and Practical Experience

Table of Contents

Ask any parent what worries them about MBBS abroad and the list is usually fees, food and safety. The question that matters just as much comes later. Will my child actually treat patients before graduating? At Georgian National University SEU in Tbilisi the answer sits in the sixth year. That year is the SEU MBBS internship and for Indian students it also decides whether the degree works back home.

Let us walk through how long it lasts, where students train, whether it pays and what NMC expects.

What the SEU MBBS Internship Actually Is

In India an internship starts after you get your degree. You get a hospital posting and usually a stipend. Georgia works differently. The SEU MBBS internship is the last year of the degree itself. Students are still enrolled and still pay tuition. The MD is awarded only once that year is complete.

Mixing up the two is the most common confusion we see. It is also why Indian graduates still do a second internship in India after clearing their screening exam.

SEU MBBS Internship Duration

The internship runs for one full year. It is the sixth year of a six-year MD programme worth 360 ECTS credits. The Embassy of Georgia in India confirms this structure for every MD programme in the country. A September 2025 statement from Georgia’s Ministry of Education, issued after a query from SEU, says the same and calls the sixth year a mandatory internship.

You will see “5+1” or “5.8 years” on some websites. It is the same course described differently. A few old pages still call SEU a five-year course, which is wrong. Trust the duration printed on your admission letter.

Clinical Training and Hospital Rotations at SEU Georgia

Hospital work does not suddenly start in Year 6. Under the Georgian model students practise basic skills in clinical skills centres during the first three years. Ward rotations begin in Year 4. By Year 6 the whole timetable has moved into hospitals.

During the internship students rotate through internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, emergency medicine and other departments. They join ward rounds, sit in outpatient clinics and present cases to their supervisors. Georgian rules allow students of any nationality to examine patients and carry out set procedures. A supervisor must be present and the patient must consent.

So which hospitals? Consultancy websites report that SEU bought a stake in American Hospital Tbilisi in 2022 and also sends students to hospitals such as Khechinashvili University Hospital and Innova. We could not confirm the current list on an official SEU page. Ask the university for it in writing before you pay.

Simulation Labs and OSCE Exams

SEU promotes simulation labs and digital anatomy tables on its campus. Students practise on mannequins before trying a skill on a real person. Clinical years are assessed through OSCEs. These are short timed stations where you examine, counsel or interpret something while an examiner scores you against a checklist. If you visit the campus, ask to see the simulation rooms and whether interns can still book them.

The Language Factor

Classes are in English. Patients mostly speak Georgian. The MD curriculum includes Georgian language classes for this reason. Students who take them seriously get far more out of the SEU MBBS internship than those who skip them.

SEU Georgia Internship Stipend: Is It Paid?

We found no official SEU document offering a stipend to sixth-year interns. That makes sense because the internship is a study year with tuition attached. Budget for Year 6 the same way as every other year. If someone promises a paid internship at SEU, ask the university to confirm it in writing.

Paid work comes after graduation. Georgian law lets MD graduates work as junior doctors under supervision.

Does the SEU MBBS Internship Meet NMC Rules?

Indian students preparing for the SEU MBBS internship in Georgia

The NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 ask for:

  • At least 54 months of medical study
  • At least 12 months of internship at the same foreign institution
  • English medium teaching
  • Eligibility for a licence in the country that awarded the degree

SEU’s six-year structure is built to cover this and Georgia’s Ministry of Education has said its MD programmes align with these rules. Still, course length alone guarantees nothing. A student who transfers universities, studies online for long stretches or splits training across countries can run into trouble. Read the rules on the NMC website and our guide to NMC guidelines for MBBS abroad before you commit.

FMGE is the current screening exam and NExT is planned to replace it. Our FMGE vs NExT guide explains both. Graduates aiming for USMLE or UKMLA should check those authorities’ own eligibility rules. No university can promise a pass.

What to Check Before Choosing SEU Georgia

Talking to current students and reading SEU reviews will give you a more honest picture than any brochure.
